The last quarter-century has seen slow growth in the American industrial sector , particularly new refineries and petrochemical facilities. And, as the oil & gas, chemical, and power industries have consolidated, so has the fragmented industrial insulation industry.
By 2000, only two calcium silicate manufacturers remained in North America: The Calsilite Group and Johns Manville. In 2002, to keep this strategic insulation product healthy and viable into the future, these two companies formed a joint venture which became Industrial Insulation Group (IIG).
IIG's formation marked a new emphasis for the industrial insulation industry. In 2003 IIG added both industrial and commercial mineral wool pipe, boards, and batts to the product offering through the purchase of the Phenix City, Alabama plant from Owens Corning.
Today IIG's combined US assets include the mineral wool plant, two calcium silicate factories, a perlite plant, a high density board production line, as well as a growing processing operation for insulation accessories. This gives industry customers a stable single source for a complete variety of insulation products.
In 2005 IIG also established a calcium silicate venture in Shanghai, China. This will allow us to more effectively grow the IIG brands internationally while continuing to efficiently serve the North American market.
